Behind Casper’s high-converting Shopify store (And how they built it)

Casper has built its reputation on selling its award-winning mattresses. But behind the clean aesthetic of its Shopify Plus store is a design process that’s anything but static. The team is constantly refining how products are presented, how stories are told, and how customers move from curiosity to purchase.

Rather than relying solely on long development cycles, Casper has found a faster way forward: empowering its design team to take ownership of implementation with Instant. From experimenting with mattress card layouts to rolling out seasonal sales banners, Casper’s team can now quickly update their store design without sacrificing brand consistency or developer bandwidth.

From big ideas to fast implementation

With Instant, Casper’s designers could create fully functional Shopify theme sections without writing code. That meant seasonal sales banners, proof point strips, brand storytelling blocks, and even home page sections could move from design file to live section without waiting for a dev sprint.

This agility not only streamlined Casper’s workflow but also opened the door to faster experimentation. The design team could test ideas, refine layouts, and roll out new sections, all while keeping the storefront consistent with Casper’s brand identity.

The mattress card experiment

One example of this new workflow came with Casper’s mattress cards. These cards sit at the heart of the shopping journey, shaping how customers compare models and decide what to explore further.

The team wanted to understand how different card layouts might influence clicks and conversions. Using Instant, they built three variations:

  • A price-forward design with current and original prices, a discount percentage, presented first; and a minimal product description.

  • A visual-led design emphasizing the product image, and summarizing the key details with a checklist.

  • A category-led design grouping multiple mattresses into one card for quick comparison.

Each variation was built as a Shopify section in Instant, then A/B tested. The winning design was then implemented across their Shopify storefront.

The test underscored the power of rapid iteration. Instead of waiting weeks for developers to code new templates, Casper’s design team could create, launch, and test ideas in days.

A broader storefront transformation

The mattress card experiment is just one snapshot of a much larger shift. Across the storefront, Casper has used Instant to introduce new theme sections that keep the brand fresh and conversion-focused:

  • Proof point banners that highlight warranty, free trial, and delivery policies.

  • Seasonal sales promotions, from Labor Day to Casper’s anniversary.

  • Custom sales cards, like Back-to-School offers.

  • Brand and storytelling sections that deepen connection with customers.

  • Video and quiz tools sections that guide shoppers toward the right mattress.

  • Homepage category banners and review strips that build trust and credibility.

Together, these sections have given Casper a way to scale design improvements across their Shopify Plus store without overburdening developers.

A new model for Shopify Plus brands

For Casper, Instant isn’t just a design tool; it’s become the backbone of a more agile storefront strategy. The mattress card experiment is one example of how small, testable ideas can lead to bigger shifts in customer experience. Multiply that design agility across any section needed for your store design, and the result is a Shopify Plus store that evolves in real time.

“Our goal was to streamline our workflow by implementing new designs and interactions without overburdening developers. With Instant as a no-code solution, the design team took full ownership of matching the implementation to approved designs. It also let us iterate quickly without involving dev sprints, freeing up developers to focus on more complex projects.” - Ryan Hiebendahl, Sr. Digital Product Designer at Casper.

The takeaway for other brands is simple: agility wins. By combining Instant with their testing platform, Casper has created a seamless design, experimentation, and implementation flow, where developers are freed to focus on complex innovation rather than constant iteration. It’s a blueprint that any Shopify Plus brand looking to scale smarter can follow.
